It's all about “politics as UN-USUAL” to start this weeks TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #220). The show commences (just like a Senate hearing) with TODD RUNDGREN'S “Tin Foil Hat” leading the charge followed closely by ROGER WATER'S latest, “Is This The Life We Really Want,” then CONSOLIDATED, JAM NATION, and the CLAYPOOL LENNON DELIRIUM all chime in. Not to be outdone, TIN HUEY (“I Could Rule the World If I Could Only Get the Parts”) and 10cc (“I Wanna Rule the World”) all finish getting the point across.

Moving forward there's other great music to be heard over the course of this program. BRIAN ENO “covers” “I'll Come Running” and ROBERT WYATT (with ATZMON & STEPHEN) does “In A Sentimental Mood.”

There's jazz from TERJE RYPDAL and TONY WILLIAMS, worldly sounds from ETRAN FINATAWA and JUANA MOLINA, English folk from JOHN MARTYN and STEELEYE SPAN, Prog from DAEVID ALLEN and VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR, “vault” selections from THE ZOMBIES and CAPTAIN BEEFHEART, local flavor from PERE UBU, and plenty of NEW music too numerous to mention here.

It was 50 years ago today that “Sgt. Peppers brought the band to play.” And did they ever! The Beatles transformed the musical landscape with their legendary album, “Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band” in the summer of 1967 so on this edition of TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #219) I'll do my small part in remembering that moment by dedicating the first set to that amazing recording as interpreted by THE BOBS, THE FLAMING LIPS, AL DIMEOLA, THE MISSION UK, FEE WAYBILL, THE RUTLES, and THE BEATLES themselves.

But wait, there's more! (music that is). STICK MEN, ROBBIE FULKS, THE AVALANCHES, TODD RUNDGREN, WARPAINT, BIG WALNUTS YONDER, SERATONES, JUANA MOLINA, SYLVAN ESSO, and THE AFGHAN WHIGS all play their latest pieces.

From the “vault” you'll hear GENTLE GIANT'S “In A Glass House,” SHADOWFAX (playing Don Cherry), PENTANGLE (doing “Goodbye Pork Pie Hat”), VANGELIS’S composition “Albedo 0.39”, KEN NORDINE, TIN HUEY, KEVIN AYERS, and New York street musician MOONDOG. World music includes songs from TIGER BLOSSOM, TABLA BEAT SCIENCE, AND LES AMAZONES D'AFRIQUE. I'll even finish the show with another great song, “Castles Made of Sand,” by the master of the Stratocaster, JIMI HENDRIX.

Come one, come all and enjoy a fun packed three hour program.

Psychedelic...whimsical...cutting edge...unique...These are just a few of the terms that can be used to describe today's TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #217).

The program leads off with the psychedelic folk sounds of SAMANDTHEPLANTS, followed by new indie super band BIG WALNUTS YONDER, then the DAVID ALLEN WEIRD QUARTET does a couple of unique numbers which gives way to THURSTON MOORE'S latest, into a whimsical piece from the classical strings of SETI THE FIRST and finally completing the set with BELTUNER and it's Parisian folk rhythm's.

You'll hear plenty of other great pieces today as the show progresses. There's jazz “covers” from STAN GETZ & JOAO GILBERTO, DYLAN HOWE, and the BRYAN FERRY ORCHESTRA, international music from THE CHIEFTAINS, TINARIWEN, and DILON DJINDI DILON, percussive pieces from ENO & BYRNE and MANI NEUMEIER & PETER HOLLINGER, electronica from HECTOR ZAZOU and THE CHEMICAL BROTHERS, “vault” selections from SNAKEFINGER, JERRY GARCIA, WENDY CARLOS, and JADE WARRIOR, and more NEW songs by JUANA MOLINA, WIRE, LES AMAZONES D'AFRIQUE, and RALPH TOWNER.

This program definitely has a great flow to it. Don't miss it!

On this edition of TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #215) I'll put my best foot forward and play musical chairs with a multitude of song styles and “vault” melodies in a way that I think you'll really enjoy.

Devotchka starts the program off followed by Italian film composer Ennio Morricone, before switching gears with Gang of Four, Ray Manzarek, another great piece from David Bowie's final “Lazarus” sessions, and finish it up with the space age pop stylings of Esquivel.

The second set brings two great masters of “voice,” Ken Nordine and Laurie Anderson (both whom I had the pleasure of meeting and interacting with last weekend thanks to long time friend Bryan Chandler). There's also “vault” nuggets from Can, Cabaret Voltaire, Robert Fripp & the League of Gentlemen, and J J Burnel; and a NEW song from Angelique Kidjo and Les Amazones D'Afrique.

Later there's music from Pere Ubu, Harry Partch, Mallard, Hatfield & the North, and several NEW cuts from Steve Lehman & Selebeyone, John McLaughlin, Jesca Hoop, and an rarely heard instrumental track from a NEW John Martyn boxed set.

Today's program (TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES Episode #213) mark the completion of my 5th year at SFCR/KUSF-in-Exile. I'll mark this anniversary by playing some of my favorite cuts by many of the artists I treasure most.

To begin the show I'll start where it all began long ago, with the song “Art of Almost” by Wilco. During the first set you'll also hear songs from Brian Eno, Laurie Anderson, Parquet Courts, Pere Ubu, and two NEW pieces
from Wire and Johann Johannsson. In keeping with my ongoing obsession to
play “covers” you'll hear The Flaming Lips and Akiko Kanazawa cover The Beatles and David Bedford cover Wagner's entire “Ring Cycle” in one minute.

Of course I'll delve into the “vault” and bring out Frank Zappa (200 Motels), the legendary psych masterpiece The United States of America (Joe Byrd), Nick Drake, Henry Cow, Roy Harper, and McKendree Spring. NEW material will be played by The Residents, Ralph Towner, Carl Palmer's Uduguru, and Mary Halvorson's Octet. World music is played (as always) and you'll hear from Juana Molina, Huun Huur Tu, Djivan Gasparayan & Michael Brook, and Samba Toure. Old friends Tin Huey are heard along with John Cale and The Rolling Stones (playing what else? “2000 Light Years from Home”).

Finally, it's been a great ride during my time at SFCR, but I've decided to begin anew on a different radio station beginning next week. I'll be gracing the internet airwaves on Hi Lo Radio every Friday from 9 am to noon Eastern.

http://www.hiloradio.com/

Immediately following that broadcast, TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES will be available as a podcast at http://transmusicairwaves.podomatic.com/

Thanks to the entire staff of SFCR for all their support and please keep supporting community radio in the bay area.

It's time for another TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES and on this installment (Episode #212) you can't go wrong with The Bonzo Dog Band playing “I Left My Heart in San Francisco” AND “The Sound of Music,” Patti Smith's band rediscovering the “Dead's” “Black Peter,” and Sponge singing the “Go Speed Racer Go” cartoon theme.

Add to that music from Wendy Carlos' “Tron” and an Ennio Morricone film score, jazz with Bernie Green & His Guitar Orchestra, The Bad Plus, and the late Allan Holdsworth; “Prog” from The White Noise, Daevid Allen, and The Rotter's Club, and obscurities from rock stalwarts 10cc, T. Rex, and Robin Trower.

There's more NEW electronica from Carl Palmer, John Hardin, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, and Ray Sammartano, and plenty of world music offerings, psychedelic meanderings, and folk stylings to satisfy even the most discerning listener.
