Today's TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (#211) certainly has a psychedelic feel to it at its core. Vintage cuts by The Doors (“Not to Touch the Earth”), Velvet Underground & Nico (“Sunday Morning”), Jefferson Airplane (“Star Track”), and the West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band (“Buddah”) are all interwoven with a variety of newer artists in that genre such as Goat, Dukes of Stratosphear (XTC), and Unknown Mortal Orchestra.

But don't fret Alice, if those offerings aren't your cup of tea there's more diversity to “peak” your interest and keep you from straying too far down the “rabbit hole.” Charles Mingus, Tom Waits, Morton Subotnick, and The Silk Road Ensemble (feat. Yo Yo Ma) all stretch their chops today along with Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Jean Michel Jarre, Townes Van Zandt, Stomu Yamash'Ta and “covers” from African Underground All Stars (U2's “Desire”) and Geoffrey Oryema (Talking Heads “Listening Wind”).

Add to this “tea” party NEW pieces from The Residents, Pink Martini, Jesca Hoop, Uduguru (Carl Palmer), and Heron Oblivion and you've got a three hour experience that would make the Mad Hatter giggle uncontrollably with glee at.

Today's playlist:

SET #1: JESCA HOOP “The Lost Sky”**/TOM WAITS “Blow Me Away”/MODEST MOUSE “She Ionizes and Atomizes"/HERBIE HANCOCK “This is Rob Swift”/UDUGURU (aka CARL PALMER) “Oh Siri”**/JEFFERSON AIRPLANE “Star Track”/FRANK ZAPPA & THE MOTHERS OF INVENTION “The Air”/

SET #2: THE RESIDENTS “Shroud of Flames”**/YO YO MA & THE SILK ROAD ENSEMBLE “Wake the Dead”/DENT “Together Again for the First Time At Last”/STOMU YAMASH'TA “Rain Song”/GOAT “The Light Within”/CHARLES MINGUS “Taurus in the Arena of Life”/RY COODER “Which Came First”/

SET #3: HERON OBLIVION “Seventeen Landscapes”**/NEIL YOUNG & CRAZY HORSE “Sedan Delivery”/GUIDED BY VOICES “Learning to Hunt”/DARCY JAMES ARGUE'S SECRET SOCIETY “Trust No One (feat. SEBASTIAN NOELLE & CARL MARAGHI)”**/STANLEY CLARKE “Vulcan Princess”/BRIAN ENO “What Actually Happened?”/JEAN MICHEL JARRE “Blah Blah Cafe”/

For one day each year everyone gets to be Irish so in honor of this event I'll play several related pieces from The Chieftains, Spiro, Horslips and Pentangle during the fourth set on this edition of TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (#207).

The show begins with an entirely different theme however as 15-60-75 (The Numbers Band) brings us “Tellusyourvision,” followed by Leonard Nimoy's “A Visit to a Sad Planet,” and Hawkwind's “Fable of a Failed Race.” Later in the set you'll hear the new David Bowie song “No Plan” followed by a remix
of “Swing Lo, Sweet Cadillac” by Dizzie Gillespie, and then a piece by Joe Strummer.

Also included today are selections from The Residents, early Pink Floyd, Henry Kaiser, Cracker and Charles Lloyd & The Marvels both “cover” country standards, plus Negativland, Can, Curved Air, and Duane Eddy are all played. NEW releases are heard from Ray Sammartano, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith,
Darcy James Argue's Secret Society, another Ty Segall release, The Pretenders, and more from Steve Lehman and The Flaming Lips.

It's old vs. NEW and a whole lot more on this edition of TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (#206). I'll reach into the “vault” and play a remastered version of “Dolly Dagger” by Jimi Hendrix to start this show and then during the course of the program I'll add more “vault” selections from The Zombies Ravi Shankar, Donovan, Jefferson Airplane, Taj Mahal, Brian Auger's Oblivion Express, and finish everything off with Neil Young's “On the Beach.”

Plenty of NEW pieces are heard including the latest offerings from The Flaming Lips, Cherry Glazerr, The Pretenders, Wussy, The Monkees, Steve Lehman, John Zorn, and Robert Glasper interpreting the music of Miles Davis. You'll get your jazz, rock, and “covers” fix from two sources; The Bad Plus plays “Iron Man” and Patti Smith does The Doors “Soul Kitchen.”

Then there's that whole other matter of international music with songs from Namgar (Mongolia), Toto La Mompostina (Columbia), Osamu (Japan), Dengue Fever (Cambodia/USA), Spiro (U.K.), and Lakou Mizik (Haiti).

Film Soundtracks are played from Alexandre Desplat (The Kings Speech) and Maurice Jarre (Witness), and film documentary music from Kurt Cobain (Montage of Heck) and Charlie Clouser (Robert Moog score) are also heard. Pretty eclectic huh?

During this four year run of TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES I've kept my overall vision intact of what I think makes this free form radio program work. I love blending NEW releases with various musical styles from a broad spectrum of artists. If you are looking for the world's most popular mainstream artists and their commercial hits, look elsewhere.

On today's episode (#204) you'll hear music from Ornette Coleman, Eno & Byrne, Morey Kante, Modest Mouse, Esquivel, Stereolab, Nash the Slash, Faust, Wendy Carlos, and the late Larry Coryell.

NEW cuts include selections from John Zorn, The Flaming Lips, Steve Lehman & Selebeyone, The Pretenders, Cherry Glazerr, and Spiro. From the “vault” I've chosen songs from Peter Hammill, The James Gang (doing “Bluebird”), the psychedelic folk of Warm Gold, and The Smoke playing their most famous melody, “My Friend Jack.” It's just a sampling of what's in store so tune in and see for yourself.
