Today I'm offering a look back to an earlier time and present a show from my archives, marking the anniversary of my second year back on the air at KUSF-In Exile, San Francisco Community Radio. It's TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES EPISODE #61, which originally aired on April 18, 2014. Below is the description of the program and the show's playlist.

Two years...24 months...104 weeks (and episodes)...three different show titles...one GREAT radio station!!
With today’s program, Transmusic Airwaves (#61), I’ve completed two years at SFCR (San Francisco Community Radio)/KUSF-in-Exile. Being part of the bay area’s free form community radio station has been a thrill for me. It hardly seems like yesterday when a former colleague asked me if I’d be interested in returning to radio after three decades of absence to do a show at San Francisco’s legendary station.
Early on I had my doubts if this would work, but thankfully it has. Left with a couple of weeks to prepare back then I decided the show would take on the elements of free form programming that I grew up listening to in the 1970’s in the Cleveland, Ohio area. It was that radio and music scene which has molded my personal tastes ever since.
So here we are, finishing up year two and set to start year three. Today’s program will begin with Mose Allison explaining “My Brain” and cover a multitude of styles over its three hour length.

Greetings campers,

It's time for another weekly foray into the world of freeform radio. This week on Transmusic Airwaves (Episode #414) it's a doozy of a show and I think you'll have a swell time listening to it. Jeepers, maybe I should quit describing it like a nineteenth-century charlatan and actually tell you some of the things you'll be hearing this week

There's songs about Martians by David Bowie(interpreted by The Bad Plus) Marc Bolan (sung by Emily Haines) and of course, the Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers classic 'Here Come The Martian Martians.'

There's a set where I combine elements of Ska, Big Band Punk, New Wave, No Wave, Swedish folk, Soul, and Akron rock. For fun, try and match those descriptions with the bands that I list here: XTC, Shakin' Pickle, Swollen Monkeys, DNA, Varttina, Librarians with Hickeys, and Aretha Franklin.

There's also more new material from Brian Eno, Freq Out (featuring Carl Palmer and his Big Hair), Femi and Made Kuti, and Laura Marling, obscure 'vault" melodies from the Peanut Butter Conspiracy, the Gil Evans Orchestra, the Mothers of Invention, and Nick Drake.

It seems that March has flown by this year and as we complete the first full week of spring, I'll celebrate with music from MCKENDREE SPRING, BRUCE COCKBURN, and DAEVID ALLEN to start off this edition of TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #412).

Following those artists, I've assembled another great show with lots of twists (musically) to keep it interesting including completing that first set with a remix of PETER GABRIEL'S 'Games Without Frontiers,' a collaboration from kora virtuoso FODAY MUSA SUSO and composer PHILLIP GLASS, early DAVID BOWIE, and Australia's Prog pioneers SUPER FURRY ANIMALS.

It amazes me sometimes that even a TV commercial can lead to a moment of inspiration and that's exactly what happened on this week's TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #411). Amidst watching a nature program a commercial for a trendy item aired during the break, and there was an element of familiarity in the background music for the ad. Immediately I knew that a track by the artist, the African psychedelic band KOKOKO, was being used. It was a eureka moment, and several of those moments established the groundwork for this weeks show.

The bass line from the song that followed KoKoKo, NILSSON'S 'Jump Into The Fire,' fit perfectly into what became today's first set. From those pieces the puzzle began to assemble with HALL & OATES, ENNIO MORRICONE and BASTIEN KEB (both current offerings), and two string inspired melodies from QUARTET SAN FRANCISCO and YO YO MA & THE SILK ROAD ENSEMBLE completing the initial thirty minutes.

The fun continued with THE B-52'S, CHRIS BUTLER, and JUANA MOLINA all getting the next segment going. Other noteworthy artists I'll play for you today include 'vault' offerings from RICKIE LEE JONES, THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE, SANTANA, GLASS HARP, SHUGGIE OTIS, and a STEELY DAN number. There's a MONTY PYTHON sketch or two to wet your comedy appetite, international goodies from BAMBA WASSOULOU GROOVE, TRISIAN, and BAABA MAAL, indie legends JOSEPH ARTHUR and ELLIOT SMITH, and several more surprises.

I hope you can drop by and give this week a listen. Maybe, just maybe, it'll lead to a moment of inspiration for you too!

On this week's TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #410) I'll salute the late Michael Stanley, reminisce about the last live event I attended before the lock-down (the Akron Music Awards) by playing the bands that were honored there, produce a Gamelan inspired set, and in general keep the great music flowing as the light at the end of the tunnel gets brighter these days.

Leading things off this week is STEREOLAB, then a classic ROXY MUSIC track followed by MICHAEL STANLEY from his 1973 debut, and other songs from SPROINGG, LAURA MARLING, XIU XIU, ALLEN RAVENSTINE, and Somali songstress MARYAM MURSAL.

There's the Gamelan stylings of LOU HARRISON, MANI NEUMEIER & PETER HOLLINGER, and DON CHERRY'S 'Brown Rice' mixed into the musical cauldron with ENNIO MORRICONE, SOPWITH CAMEL SUFJAN STEVENS, CRACKER, and SNAKEFINGER all bubbling away during the third set.

Akron Music Award recipients THE BEYONDERERS, FANCY LEGS, and FUNERAL PROPOSALS are heard during the later part of today’s program, plus more 'vault goodies' are spun from THE CLASH, PETER HAMMILL, JOHN MARTYN, CHRIS SQUIRE (his 'Lucky Seven' piece), JOE WALSH, HOPSLIPS, and of course, ROBERT WYATT.

New Guinea’s GEORGE TELEK, Italy's SPACCANAPOLI, and Iceland's JOHAN JOHANNSSON add an international flair to the mix while DEVANDRA BANHART (from 'Angel Headed Hipster'), BASTIEN KEB, and LEO KOTTKE & MIKE GORDEN continue to give you more from their latest works.

It's time for another weekly tour through my 'musical mindscape' with the latest edition of TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #409). Each week's journey varies widely as a program evolves based on several loosely formed outlines from song choices I've compiled and thrown into a specific show's folder. That folder always includes new releases, tracks I've initially chosen from the 'vault,' a group or track mentioned by a friend(s), and relatable songs that those original choices inspire.

This week a conversation with a friend initiated my search for something from OINGO BOINGO, and I chose their cover of 'You Really Got Me' which rhythmically lead to a track by DEVO, following that with a cut by NEW YORK GONG, which as the song waned, flowed nicely into THE MAGNETIC FIELDS, JESCA HOOP, and finished up with another new piece from THE MOUNTAIN GOATS.

It's that thought process which always keeps the show interesting for me. The idea that artists that are polar opposites and yet can be blended together effortlessly is another goal I strive for. This week's show begins with PERE UBU then following them is a song from STEELEYE SPAN, then other choices from THE STRANGLERS, BJORK, ARTURO STALTARI (a classically inspired Brian Eno piece), ROMEO VOID, and a TODD RUNDGREN instrumental.

Here's a few other names you can look forward to hearing this week: 'vault' selections from TOM RAPP, NICK DRAKE, FAUST, and CARAVAN, new material from ENNIO MORRICONE, BAMBA WASSOULOU GROOVE, and BASTIEN KEB, and music from contemporary artists DEERHOOF, BELA FLECK, and MODEST MOUSE. On this edition of TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #408) I'll celebrate the eighth anniversary of this program under it's current name as I continue to bring the listener my vision of freeform radio. That concept has always involved various musical genres, spoken word, and comedy seamlessly blended and intergrated into six sets over the course of three hours.

Things get started today with WILCO (from 'Yankee Hotel Foxtrot'), moving next to GAVIN FRIDAY'S take on another Marc Bolan gem from the 'Angel Headed Hipster' album, following those with a KING CRIMSON request before setting off with additional tracks from AUDITORY SCULPTURE, THE GOASTT, BRIAN SANDS, WHITE NOISE, and a cut from the new ENNIO MORRICONE release.

I've placed plenty of 'vault' melodies from the likes of VANGELIS, PHIL MANZANERA'S 801, LOTHAR & THE HAND PEOPLE, and the MAHAVISHNU ORCHESTRA into various sets surrounded by new material from BAMBA WASSOULOU GROOVE, MONK'ESTRA, WIRE, and ONEOHTRIX POINT NEVER, film soundtrack pieces from THOMAS NEWMAN (WALL-E) and ALEXANDRE DESPLAT (The Shape of Water), and tracks from local legends 15-60-75 and TIN HUEY.

There's even a series of songs from DAVID BOWIE, RY COODER, TOM WAITS, BASTIEN KEB, and LEO KOTTKE & MIKE GORDON tied together thematically during today's fourth set. All in all it's another show worthy of your attention so keep listening and I'll do my part to keep you surprised and entertained.
