Transmusic Airwaves (Episode #377) - July 10, 2020 - with Paul Ciminero (host)

Another musical gem from HARVEY GOLD'S forthcoming album, 'It's Messy, Vol. 1,' a blistering violin based rendition of 'Maggot Brain,' Spooky Tooth's interpretation of 'I Am The Walrus,' and new pieces of musical goodness from OUTRONAUT, THE HADEN TRIPLETS, and STEPHEN MALKMUS are just a few of the things I've lined up on this latest offering of TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #377).

You appear to be interested in hearing more, yes? I've combined NICK DRAKE, CODE SANGALA, LUCIUS (singing 'Uncle John's Band'), THE FIERY FURNANCES, XTC, KING CRIMSON, and an astounding remix of CAN'S 'You Do Right' all during the second set today. (Eyes getting wider as you hear this).

And then later I'll resurrect vintage tracks from THE WHO and PINK FLOYD, blend them in with AKRON; FAMILY, MORPHINE, JOHN LURIE (from 'Get Shorty'), MOGWAI, and more new songs from DEERHOOF and BRYAN SCARY. Geez, said no one in particular, this is sounding more and more like 'I'm in!'

Oh yeah, and there's ENNIO MORRICONE'S 'The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly' assembled together with THE MEKONS, THE SOGGY BOTTOM BOYS (What??), Somali songstress MARYAM MURSAL, SLAPP HAPPY, and PETER GORDON & THE LOVE OF LIFE ORCHESTA to finish everything up today. Transmusic Airwaves Presents: Vicotin Popsicles #20 from September 7, 2012 on KUSF-In Exile - with Paul Ciminero (host)
June 30, 2020 12:18 PM PDT
itunes pic

In honor of Carl Reiner's passing, here's a special 'radio rewind' from my days with KUSF-in-Exile, San Francisco Community Radio from September 7, 2012 and my original program 'Vicotin Popsicles.'

On this program I'll mix music from Russia's favorite punk anarchists, Pussy Riot, with dialogue from the film, 'The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming' (Starring Carl Reiner and Alan Arkin) as well as other great music during the extended third set. Detail's below Comrade!

“Emergency..emergency...everybody to get from street” - Lt. Rozanov
("The Russians Are Coming, The Russians are Coming”)

Youssarian: Comrade Dmitri...you see these ravishing beauties on TV screen? They have been incarcerated for acts of “hooliganism” against our Czarist state...

Dmitri: Da...such is the punishment for dancing provocatively in church while singing of Czar Putin’s many discretion's.

Youssarian: We must listen to that subversive radio show, "VICOTIN POPSICLES,” to find out the truth about these heinous acts for which they are charged.

Dmitri: And to experience the muzaks which they and their fellow comrades offer.

Youssarian: Da.. tune the shortwave to the latest VICOTIN POPSICLES as tribute is paid to Russia’s jailed Punk girl band, PUSSY RIOT, and the song that started it all, “Putin Lights up the Fires,” along with other punk anthems, related music, and dialogue from the cinema’s “The Russians are Coming, The Russians are Coming.”

Rumors have started that songs from the Sex Pistols, Iggy Pop, Sham 69, Glaxo Babies, Circle Jerks, 10cc, Material, and William S. Burroughs (?) will be included.

Dmitri: What other subversive goodness will this radio program provide?

Youssarian: Muzaks from Nancy Sinatra, Stereolab, Faust, Sam Bush, and DeVotchKa to name few...

Dmitri: Bring the shortwave...I’ll get the Borsht...

As we enter the first full weekend of summer, this week on TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #375) I've assembled plenty of artists to listen to while engaging in your outdoor activities. I'll start of with another great tune from HARVEY GOLD'S forthcoming release, It's Messy, Vol. 1, 'In Consideration Of Joe Strummer,' then follow it with the man he's singing about, JOE STRUMMER, adding GONG, TALKING HEADS, THEE OH SEES, MIDLAKE, and a GRATEFUL DEAD track all to the first set of the day.

I'll be releasing my inner child (literally) on this week's TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #374) during a whimsical second set that will feature songs about children and, in several cases, with children, that both kids and adults will enjoy.

Songs from LOTHAR & THE HAND PEOPLE ('Kids Are Little People'), KEN NORDINE ('My Baby'), The Mekons SALLY TIMMS & JOHN LANGFORD (singing Bowie's 'The Prettiest Star'), ANDY PARTRIDGE, RALPH AND RALPH (Ralph Carney & Ralph Legnini), LOL COXHILL (the legendary children's chorus of 'I Am The Walrus'), and several tracks from MEDESKI, MARTIN, & WOOD all get aired during the final portion of the first hour today.

There's plenty of other things to get excited about on this program as well. HARVEY GOLD has his forthcoming new release 'It's Messy, Vol.1,' getting initial airplay right here with the song 'The Fence,' and I'll give you links to how you can download the track and donate to the SPLC and NAACP by purchasing it. Other artists with NEW material heard today include DEERHOOF, SPARKS, THE BREAKERS, OUTRONAUT, and SLEEP DAY, plus there's lots of musical variety with music from CHARLES MINGUS, HABIB KOITE, BUCKETHEAD, JIM WHITE, and CORNELIUS.

From the 'vault' I'll get everything started with part of the suite 'I Can't Feel Nothin' from CAPTAIN BEYOND'S legendary debut, and then later you'll hear other great pieces by KEVIN AYERS, CARPE DIEM, ULTIMATE SPINACH, and Curved Air's SONJA KRISTINA. I'll throw in LEONARD COHEN, SPACCANAPOLI, STEREOLAB, DEVO, and ESQUIVEL for good measure and the show should be well worth adding to your weekly program playlist.

There's a lot of great music on this edition of TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #373) including plenty of NEW releases, 'vault' selections, and an array of 'covers' to keep even the most finicky listener
smiling.

SPARKS, BRYAN SCARY, and DEERHOOF all scratch your new release itch during today's first set all while being surrounded by tracks from THE CLAYPOOL LENNON DELIRIUM, LAURIE ANDERSON, WIRE, and GIBBY HAYNES.

ONYX COLLECTIVE get's the first of several 'covers' going during the second set by playing The Beatles 'Within You, Without You, then Daevid Allen and GONG follows with their ethereal piece 'This Revolution' which leads into BRUCE COCKBURN'S rendition of Pete Seeger's 'Turn, Turn, Turn,' followed by LEO KOTTKE taking on 'Tumbling Tumbleweeds,' and climaxing with BRIAN ENO doing Sam Cooke's 'I'll Come Running.'

During later sets you'll hear TOM WAITS channeling Disney's 'Heigh Ho' (The Seven Dwarfs marching song), LUNA (a Korean artist playing the gayaguem, a 12 string koto like instrument) covering Dylan's 'All Along The Watchtower,' and TREK WITH QUINTRONIC doing their version of 'When I Was Young,' the rock classic by The Animals.

Transmusic Airwaves (Episode #372) - June 5, 2020 - with Paul Ciminero (host)

Wow! It's hard to put into words all of the events of the past week. As I began assembling this week's program (TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES, Episode #372) last Friday afternoon, I had a couple of sets in mind (one involving the Space X launch and the other, ancient Egypt) to build the show around. Both of those still remain intact, so during the fourth and fifth sets you'll hear music (and a comedy bit) with both of those themes.

Egypt and the pharaoh’s get their due during set #4, with music from JUNE TABOR, NIK TURNER'S SPHINX, DUKE ELLINGTON, and THE BANGLES (take a wild guess), before morphing in a more ominous tone with CHI PIG ('Apu-Api Help Me') THE MOTHERS OF INVENTION ('Trouble Every Day'), and an instrumental juggernaut by SHPONGLE from their 'Museum Of Consciousness' album.

The fifth set starts off with BOB & DOUG MCKENZIE spoofing outer space from SCTV's Season 4, then what follows is a multitude of space songs intermixed with spoken word from the likes of CHROME, MCKENDREE SPRING, SPIRIT, BLACK PUMAS, YOUTH, PERE UBU, GOLEMS OF THE RED PLANET, and yes, you guessed it, good ol' Captain Kirk himself, WILLIAM SHATNER.

There's plenty of other great stuff in store including 'vault' selections from US 69, OREGON, and INCREDIBLE STRING BAND; new tracks from OUTRONAUT, DEERHOOF, THE BREAKERS, and BRYAN SCARY; 'covers' from THE FLAMING LIPS & MICHAEL VINER'S INCREDIBLE BONGO BAND, plus THE MEKONS, JOE STRUMMER & THE MESCALEROS, PETER BLEGVAD, and PAUL PENA all added for good measure.

I'll finish everything off with GEOFFREY ORYEMA'S anthem for these times 'How Long Will It Take,' a killer new cut from SLEEP DAY (Shane Curry), and SPARKS from their latest, A Steady Drip, Drip, Drip' and an appropriately titled tack which summarizes our fearful leader's Monday performance, 'Sainthood Is Not In Your Future.'

On today's edition of TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #371), I'll begin the program by remembering one of the world's most prolific kora players, MORY KANTE, then play a vintage jazz fusion track from JAN HAMMER & JERRY GOODMAN'S 'Like Children' album, sonically temper in the latest from 15-60-75 (The NUMBERS BAND) and the surf rock sounds of DAN PETERS & THE WEST SIDE WINDERS, segue into an imaginative duet from BELA FLECK (on banjo) and BOBBY MCFERRIN (scat vocals), before pounding the 'skins' with the percussive sounds of BAHIA BLACK and Wilco's GLENN KOTCHE all in the first thirty minutes.

During the remaining sets today you'll hear another astounding track from DEERHOOF'S latest paired up with HENRY COW, JOHN G. PERRY'S 'Sunset Wading,' BRYAN SCARY, and GODLEY & CREME; then later FRANK ZAPPA & THE MOTHERS in rhythmic unison with LES CLAYPOOL, MARI BOINE, ROBBIE ROBERTSON, THE RESIDENTS, ELP, and CURVED AIR.

LOS LOBOS, Cleveland's TINY ALICE, YES, BADLY DRAWN BOY, and TOM WAITS anchor another set before everything winds down (if you can call it that) with ANDY PARTRIDGE, CHRIS BUTLER, MAGNET (featuring Mo Tucker), and BJORK. Transmusic Airwaves (Episode #369) - May 15, 2020 - with Paul Ciminero (host)
May 14, 2020 01:21 PM PDT
itunes pic

It's time for another broadcast of my freeform radio show TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #369) and you're all probably wondering how I'll attempt to reinvent the wheel this week so here's an insight into how I planned today's show.

After several days of compiling dozens of musical tracks into a numbered program folder, I started to organize them according to either a specific sound or set theme. I knew I'd play music from LITTLE RICHARD and Florian Schneider (KRAFTWERK) to honor their legacy and having just watched the PBS special on MILES DAVIS I was struck by how he came to use Indian instruments in his recordings in the early 1970's so all of those factors had a bearing on what would become part of this show.

I decided to start the show off with DEVO doing 'Social Fools' as a tongue in cheek swipe at protesters demanding states to reopen, then I listened to other artists and picked out a song sequence that had ARIEL PINK, OUTRONAUT, THE ART BEARS, KLEPTOKRAT, LENE LOVICH, and TIN HUEY all moving seamlessly from one cut to the next to finish that first set.

KRAFTWERK (playing 'Trans Europe Express') and LITTLE RICHARD'S rendition of 'Good Golly Miss Molly' would anchor the third set and covers by SENOR COCONUT ('Autobahn') and THE FLYING LIZARDS ('Tutti Fruiti') would augment each of those cuts allowing everything to flow nicely into SYD BARRETT's'Gigolo Aunt' and the German Bierhaus band FSK.

Later on, you'll hear MILES DAVIS play 'Black Satin' from On The Corner, then I'll blend NUSRAT FATAH ALI KHAN, ETRAN FINATAWA, and PENTANGLE (all fitting stylistically together) in another series of segues that will conclude with BRYAN SCARY and CARAVAN.

I had so much fun assembling this show that by the time I got to the final set, inspiration abounded and the show ended up a little longer than usual as a result. How can you play CAPTAIN BEEFHEART ('Diddy Wah Diddy'), TOM TOM CLUB ('Under The Boardwalk') BUSTER POINDEXTER ('Castles In Spain') and XAVIER CUGAT ('Brazil') and not be happy?
