On this week's TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES, I've decided to step away from producing a new program, and in it's place, air one of my early broadcasting tapes from January 11, 1978 as a host of the legendary progressive music program FRESH AIR on WKSU-FM 89.7 FM at Kent State University. Beginning in the fall of 1976 through the summer of 1981, I was a DJ on FRESH AIR as well as hosting and producing numerous jazz and folk programs.

This tape comes from an archive of FRESH AIR shows gathered from former DJ's, listeners, and friends who recorded the show as it aired over the radio on their cassette decks or reel to reel players and were eventually gathered, transferred, and digitally remastered into an archive with over 500 hours of programming on it.

This recording was made on Wednesday morning, January 11, 1978 as Fresh Air was being broadcast from midnight until 3 a.m. at the time. The program begins at approximately 12:40 a.m. and runs well past the 3 a.m. normal sign off time. It begins with the band CARAVAN'S latest import release, 'Better By Far,' and the song 'Nightmare,' and contains other stalwarts that we were playing at the time including PHIL MANZANERA/801, BRAND X, BRUCE COCKBURN, JOHN MARTYN, VANGELIS, EBERHARD WEBER, and DAEVID ALLEN.

KEVIN AYERS' entire song, 'The Confession Of Dr. Dream' (coming in at 18:51 in length) is played during the 2 a.m. 'space set' as well. There's even an appearance by the Humpback Whale Album, 'DEEP VOICES,' that I conveniently used as a background while announcing a set that segued into JOHN HARTFORD singing 'Dancing In The Bathtub.' The program finishes with the WKSU-FM sign off cart, containing the APHRODITE’S CHILD song 'Break,' and the technical spec's of WKSU'S licensing. I hope you enjoy the show.

Remembering DR. JOHN, playing a cut from HAL WILNER'S 'Meditations On Mingus' album, and following that with the cult band THE SLITS covering 'Heard It Through The Grape Vine,' gets the juices (and the show) going on this weeks TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #324). That first set also includes another nugget from THE BUDOS BANDS latest, plus a short piece from BRIAN ENO & RICK HOLLAND, a stylish ditty from sometime super group BIG WALNUTS YONDER, before finishing with another masterpiece from JOE STRUMMER & THE MESCALERO'S 'Streetcore' album.

All that's left is the shouting as they say and two and a half more hours of great music, occasional pontificating about CD's that skip, songs that fade & drive me crazy, and segues that work well. Oh, and there's also some songs from KEVIN AYERS & THE WHOLE WORLD, STEVE HILLAGE, Akron's UNIT 5 and TIME CAT, Paul Horn from 'Inside The Great Pyramid,' LITTLE FEAT howlin' at the 'Spanish Moon,' and some thoughts and stories about HENDRIX at Woodstock (to go along with the latest family reissue) via his PURPLE HAZE track. Listening starts around 9 am on June 14.

On this weeks TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #323) in my continuing effort to bring more information about the artists I play, their music, and pertinent background information on how they go about their creative process, I''ll begin the program with another track from STEREOLAB'S 2019 remaster of their 'Mars Audiac Quintet' album, and at the end of the first set, discuss the production technique of 'baking' magnetic tapes reels and why it was needed to salvage some of the bands master tapes from further deterioration.

That's just one of the many topic's (and material) covered during this weeks show. I'll also pay tribute to ROKY ERICKSON and LEON REDBONE (both who passed away recently), play a request for CAPTAIN BEEFHEART which then evolves into a stellar set with additional songs from THE BEATLES, RHIANNON GIDDENS (her latest), SYD BARRETT, EUGENE CHADBOURNE, RALPH CARNEY, and Nate Brenner's NAYTRONIX.

There more NEW selections including a cut from the latest GONG release, more from locals THE HI-FI'S and LEAF BORBIE & THE FAMILY TREE, plus other new songs by THE MOUNTAIN GOATS and NIK TURNER. I've also got 'vault' gems from LOVE, VAN DYKE PARKS, and NEGATIVLAND, and a variety of other musical slices that feature everything from jazz by DUKE ELLINGTON to an international cross section from TOTO BONA LOKUA and Italy's SPACCANAPOLI. Add in some PIXIES, THE BREEDERS, and WILLIAM S. BURROUGHS channeling Jim Morrison, and it all adds up to another eclectic line up.

Another week has flown by and it's time once again for the latest edition of TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #322). I've rarely missed a beat over the course of the last seven years when it comes to producing a new show each week and this week was no different, challenges and all. Challenges? Oh come Paul! How difficult is it to turn out this program each week asks every skeptic I know. When your as obsessive as I am, every day missed gives me a day or two less to perfect the show and this past week there was a holiday to shorten the production schedule.

Music wise there's plenty of interesting NEW pieces blended into some great 'vault' tracks this week including more new songs from THE HI-FI'S, SAD PLANETS (Patrick Carney & John Petkovic), THE BUDOS BAND, RHIANNON GIDDENS (with Francesco Turrisi), and GUIDED BY VOICES. STEREOLAB'S got a never before played bonus track from the newly expanded 2019 edition of the 'Mars Audiac Quintet' album, THE BEYONDERER'S premiere another from the latest compilation 'Where The Hell Is Akron, Ohio? Vol. 2', and CAROLINE SHAW & ATTACCA QUARTET explore a modern string ensemble piece from their 'Orange' offering.

From the 'vault' you'll hear an excerpt from TERRY RILEY'S 'A Rainbow In Curved Air,' a song from the one off 70's super-group ARMAGEDDON ('Silver Tightrope'), BARRE PHILLIPS plays a cut from his 'Mountainscapes' release, and even ELVIS PRESLEY makes an appearance. There's also a selection of international, jazz, electronica, and folk to boot. It's well worth your time and my effort.

Sometimes change is a good thing. During a recent trip to Chicago, I encountered many friends who told me that they really enjoy my radio program but would love to hear more anecdotal stories about the artists I play. Well your wishes are coming true and beginning this week on TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #321) I'll be spending a little more time from now on telling you about the artists, their music, and in some cases, elaborating on the unique instruments that they play. (The Mellotron and T.O.N.T.O. synthesizer are just a couple of things discussed in more detail this week).

You'll still get plenty of great music, spoken word, occasional humor, and obsessively designed sets you've hopefully come to know and love. I'll still mispronounce things or invent a entirely new word on occasion but hey, I'm getting older by the day and finding my keys gets to be an adventure these days. Now...where was I?

As to the music stuff I mentioned, this week I've got more new songs from THE HI-FI'S, THE MOUNTAIN GOATS, SAD PLANETS (Patrick Carney & John Petkovic), THE BUDOS BAND, RHIANNON GIDDENS (with Francesco Turrisi), IRON & WINE, GUIDED BY VOICES, and THE CLAYPOOL LENNON DELIRIUM. From the 'vault' you'll get to hear PHIL OCHS, FAR EAST FAMILY BAND, TONTO'S EXPANDING HEAD BAND, and GENTLE GIANT.

Add to all of this, the DAVE LIEBMAN GROUP playing an Ornette Coleman melody, RY COODER collaborating with ALI FARKA TOURE, and more local fair from PERE UBU and THE TUFTED PUFFINS and you got a couple more reasons to put up with me for another three hours!

The cat's 'out of the bag' (and clamoring for food!)

More 'themed sets' are created including one with a 'Down On The Farm' motif which has songs from LITTLE FEAT (of course), THE BONZO'S, THE RESIDENTS, DAEVID ALLEN ('Good Morning'), and THE FORBIDDEN FIVE; and a second with a retro-proggy feel featuring ULTIMATE SPINACH, RETURN TO FOREVER, URIAH HEEP, and DAVID BOWIE.

There's a few surprises from CHRIS BUTLER, LONG TALL DEB & COLIN JOHN, OREGON, THE RAMONES, THE WHO (from 'Live At Leeds'), and JOE BYRD & THE FIELD HIPPIES. (I guess it isn't a surprise anymore now is it?)- Pictured here is Chester, this weeks assistant producer...he gives the show 10 purr's!

Sometimes the germination of a simple idea will manifest itself into a whole new series of ideas and on this edition of TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #319) several snippets of spoken word monologue and humor blossomed into a wonderfully diverse array of sets where many play a central part.

During the second set for example, JOHN HARTFORD uses a strange verbal montage to ask 'Do You Have Room? (In Your Heart For the Five String Banjo)' which is followed by fiddler VASSAR CLEMENTS' bluegrass interpretation of Cream's 'White Room.' That naturally segues into a violin laden piece by the band CAN, a couple of humorous faux commercials from FIRESIGN THEATRE, and ROBERT CALVERT'S drug inspired pre-flight checklist from his 'Captain Lockheed' release, before finishing with WENDY CARLOS' title music from A Clockwork Orange.

'What in Gawd's name'... (you're saying to yourself right about now) But wait! It get's better! The next set starts 'bluesy' with JOHN MAYALL'S new offering and eventually winds it's way up to LENNY BRUCE, DEL CLOSE & JOHN BRENDT'S 'Introduction to Speaking Hip,' THE LAST POETS, ethereal jazz trip hop from STEVE LEHMAN & SELEBEYONE, more DEL & JOHN, before finishing with the original word jazz hipster, KEN NORDINE'S 'Faces in the Jazzamatazz.'

Plus there's NEW music from SAD PLANETS and VICTOR KRUMMENACHER, and a 'vault' pick or two from PETER LAUGHNER, MOTHER MALLARD'S PORTABLE MASTERPIECE CO., David Vorhaus' WHITE NOISE, and more spoken word from LORD BUCKLEY! I may have lost my marbles this week, but I guarantee you'll have a lot of fun picking them all up!

This edition of TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #317) marks the 7th anniversary of my return to radio which began in 2012 after over thirty years away so I've gathered some of my favorite artists and songs which have influenced my musical tastes to play for you today.

I'll begin the program with KEVIN AYERS' 'Stranger In Blue Suede Shoes,' followed by some vintage PERE UBU and SPIRIT; then a new song by THE CLAYPOOL LENNON DELIRIUM which will morph magically into a 'cover' of THE BEATLES 'Because' from the 'Abbey Road Now!' compilation, before finishing the first half hour with SHAWN PHILLIPS and NICK DRAKE.

There's more great selections in store with music from 15-60-75 (THE NUMBERS BAND), XTC, JOHN CALE, THE DELTA SAXOPHONE QUARTET, DAVID BYRNE, RHIANNON GIDDENS, GONG, HECTOR ZAZOU (with BARBARA GOGAN), and New Guinea's GEORGE TELEK.

Two versions of the song 'On Some Faraway Beach' will be heard by both BRIAN ENO and pianist ARTURO STALTERI (back to back), plus LAURIE ANDERSON plays 'Oh Superman,' and Cleveland folk legend JOHN BASSETTE'S 'Hessler Street' and ROY HARPER'S 'When An Old Cricketer Leaves The Crease' all get air time.

On this weeks TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #316) I'll play music during the first set from the PATTI SMITH GROUP, JEFFERSON AIRPLANE, 10CC, and HOLGAR CZUKAY all with 'Easter' as the underlying theme.

In the second set the direction shifts as you'll hear PETER GABRIEL (singing in German), THE FLYING LIZARDS (covering 'Purple Haze'), new music from THE BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE, NIK TURNER, and THE CLAYPOOL LENNON DELIRIUM, plus two songs about cannabis from GONG and DILLARD/HARTFORD/DILLARD.

Also heard today will be RALPH CARNEY (his 'Lament For Charleston'), YUSEF LATEEF, BRIAN WILSON, THE RESIDENTS (covering Elvis' 'Return To Sender'), and ANANDA SHANKAR (covering 'Light My Fire') and I'll resolve an 'earworm' issue caused by an unidentified instrumental that was actually the traditional melody 'John Barleycorn' so you'll versions by TRAFFIC and the JOHN RENBOURN GROUP.

To purchase a copy of Ralph Carney's 'Lament For Charleston' and other melodies:
