On the latest edition of TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #289) we'll mosey 'Way Out West' during the shows first set with songs surrounding two distinct versions of JIM PEPPER'S 'Witchi Tai To' (from JAN GARBAREK and BREWER & SHIPLEY), then later on go off the rails with my rant about 'robocalls', and end up, in the words of WAS (NOT WAS), 'feeling better than James Brown.' (You'll hear that song too!)

MARTY STUART & HIS FABULOUS SUPERLATIVES gets it all started with the song 'Way Out West' followed by RICKIE LEE JONES doing 'Flying Cowboys,' then JAN GARBAREK, ROBBIE ROBERTSON, NEIL YOUNG, more this week from THE BYRDS, and finally BREWER & SHIPLEY finishes the first half hour.

During the third set I'll play songs from HENRY THREADGILL, HENRY COW, TONTO'S EXPANDING HEADBAND, and WHITE NOISE which all get mixed in with DEVOTCHKA'S latest, RON GEESIN, and PIERRE BOULEZ conducting FRANK ZAPPA.

There's also more today from the new GLENN LAZEAR album and the latest from the JOE STRUMMER archive, BAD DUDES, YONATAN GAT, and COWBOY JUNKIES releases, and other 'worldly' cuts from MOREY KANTE and BRIGITTE FONTAINE. There's plenty of local flavor, 'vault' gems, and new releases on this week's TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #288). You'll hear cuts from the newest offerings by GLENN LAZEAR, the BIZARROS, ERNIE KRIVDA, and yet another goodie from CHRIS BUTLER & RALPH CARNEY'S ode to 'Unsung Holiday's' (Buffet Day get the treatment this time). Other 'local' selections include DEVO rocking out with 'Working In The Coal Mine' and ROBERT KIDNEY doing a haunting version of his song 'Rosalee' from his 'Jackleg' album.

Additional new songs tracks are heard from DEVOTCHKA, MARTY STUART & HIS FABULOUS SUPERLATIVES (seen in the photo here from their Akron show with Chris Hillman & Roger McGuinn of The Byrds), MOGWAI, and IRON & WINE. From the 'vault' there's ROBERT MASON'S STARDRIVE, THE BYRD'S (from 'Sweetheart of the Rodeo'), JEFFERSON AIRPLANE (with 'Today' featuring the late Marty Balin), LOU REED (playing 'The Bells'), KEVIN AYERS, and LOTHAR AND THE HAND PEOPLE plus loads of jazz, world beat, folk, prog, and even an old timey standard on a 1912 calliope.

This week on the latest installment of TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #287) I'll begin with DEAN & BRITTA playing 'Knives From Batavia' from their homage to Andy Warhol's screen tests, follow that piece with NICO'S 'Lawns of Dawn' from The Marble Index, morph into two pieces from JOE BYRD'S legendary psychedelic masterpiece UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and complete the set with THE CHIEFTAINS, a LES BAXTER 'ultra lounge' standard, PETER GABRIEL'S 'German' version of 'San Jacinto,' and a piece from German proggers SPROINGG.

That all sets the stage for the remainder of the program which includes a set surrounding and interwoven with THE BEATLES 'Revolution 9' with other similar songs from GONG, THE PRETENDERS, THE PINEAPPLE THIEF, PARASITES OF THE WESTERN WORLD, and PETER HAMMILL'S 'The Future Now.'

There's more new material from CHRIS BUTLER & RALPH CARNEY, OH SEES, BRIAN ENO & TOM ROGERSON, and ERNIE KRIVDA. 'Vault' selections include 'Slush' by the BONZO DOG BAND, 'Set Your Controls for the Heart of the Sun' by PINK FLOYD, THE CHAMPS rendition of 'Tequila,' an early TASVALLAN PRESIDENTII piece and plenty of jazz, world beat, folk, and electronic to keep it interesting.

Transmusic Airwaves (Episode #286) - More Unusual Covers! - September 21, 2018 - with Paul Ciminero (host)
September 20, 2018 05:40 AM PDT
itunes pic

It's time for more unusual 'covers' on today's TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #286) and I've gathered several selections from MOJO magazine's eclectic series to play during today's show beginning with THE MAGNETIC NORTH'S interpretation of a song from the Beach Boys 'Pet Sounds' album and JIM WHITE'S somewhat bizarre take on The Beatles 'All Together Now' both during the first set. XIU XIU does 'Audrey's Dance' (an Angelo Badalamenti 'Twin Peaks' standard) during that set as well.

Later on ROBERT WYATT will 'cover' Ivor Cutler's 'Go And Sit Upon The Grass,' HAYSEED DIXIE plays 'War Pigs' bluegrass style, TAJ MAHAL exquisitely stylizes 'Honky Tonk Women,' and another Beatles song ('Love To You') gets treatment by SUKILOVE from a MOJO 'Revolver Reloaded' CD.

Plus there's more 'vault' finds from THE CRAMPS, PASSPORT ('Ostinato'), WIGWAM, and 50's soul pioneers THE MOONGLOWS. New releases include THE PINEAPPLE THIEF, COWBOY JUNKIES, and a Thelonious Monk composition done by MIHO HAZAMA & THE METROPOLE ORKEST BIG BAND. (Yup! Another cover!)

Friday September 7th was officially 'Salami Appreciation Day' so I celebrated it with that very song of the same name by CHRIS BUTLER and RALPH CARNEY from their NEW release 'Songs For Unsung Holidays' during the debut of my latest TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #284). You can still hear it surrounded by other 'food' songs during the first set including FRANK ZAPPA'S 'St. Alfonzo’s Pancake Breakfast,' BRAVE COMBO'S 'Who Stole The Kishka,' CHARLES MINGUS conveying his tastes from 'Cumbia and Jazz Fusion', DAEVID ALLEN interpreting 'Salt Peanuts,' and other relatable melodies from PRIMUS, and THE GOASTT (Sean Ono Lennon).

Among the highlights from the 'vault' this week are the psychedelic styling's of THE INSECT TRUST, a vintage DEVO song, the groovy rhythm’s of the LEMON PIPERS, a classic piece from KING CRIMSON'S 'Starless' album, and an early 'dub' effort by LEE 'SCRATCH' PERRY.

NEW album tracks by CHARLES LLOYD & THE MARVELS (featuring Lucinda Williams and Bill Frisell),THE RESIDENTS latest offering 'I Am A Resident,' plus more from UNDERWORLD & IGGY POP, ERNIE KRIVDA & SWING CITY, and THE ORB are all included today.

A set of music based on the latest absurdity to emerge from Washington, 'Space Force' makes up the entire third set on this weeks TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #281). Musical contributions from new albums by NINE INCH NAILS, THE STANLEY CLARKE BAND, and THE ORB are combined with 'vault' selections from JEFF WAYNE'S 'War of the Worlds' album (with narrative by Richard Burton), GONG, HAWKWIND, and the WEST COAST POP ART EXPERIMENTAL BAND to get the point across.

In other parts of today's show legendary jazz luminaries JOHN COLTRANE and MILES DAVIS each contribute a piece from their new reissues. From John Coltrane you'll hear a cut from his never before released 'Both Directions At Once – The Lost Album' and from Miles Davis it's a piece from the remastered recording of the 'Ascensuer Pour L'Echafaud' film score.

There's also songs from SPARKS, RYUICHI SAKAMOTO, BENJAMIN BRITTAN, HUGH HOPPER & RICHARD SINCLAIR, OLIVER MTUKUDZI, and LITTLE FEAT, and more newly released tracks from ERNIE KRIVDA & SWING CITY, DAVID BYRNE, TY SEGALL & WHITE FENCE, PALBERTA, and FATHER JOHN MISTY.

'That's It For The Other One' (newly remastered) from the 50th anniversary edition of the GRATEFUL DEAD'S 'Anthem of the Sun' and the cut 'Burn You Up, Burn You Down' from the 10th anniversary celebration of PETER GABRIEL and KARL WALLINGER'S 'Big Blue Ball' collaboration are just two of the many reasons to tune into TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #280) beginning Friday, August 10.
Throughout this three hour program, I've got some amazing musical segues arranged including TALKING HEADS' 'Ruby Please' (the Bush mix) with STEVE HILLAGE (covering 'Not Fade Away'), another between sea songs from BRYAN FERRY and the INCREDIBLE STRING BAND, and another segue of KRONOS QUARTET'S string version of 'Misirlou' and 'The Twist' blended with Tuvan throat singers HUUN-HUUR-TU.

More NEW selections are played from THE STANLEY CLARKE BAND, NINE INCH NAILS, RAY DAVIES, and THE ORB. Local fav's RALPH CARNEY and TOM HERMAN are heard along with 'vault' finds from FLYING LIZARDS, ALAN VEGA & MARTIN REV, RICHARD PINHAS, and BO HANSSON.
